Three core principles drive Decide Don’t Dwell’s Mindset and Method

The guiding principles for Decide Don’t Dwell are both a summary of the method and the foundation which the Decide Don’t Dwell method is built upon. The principles cover the Mindset, the Method, and the Follow-through required for designing and executing successful decisions.

PRINCIPLE 1: Mindset
Stop THE DWELLING MINDSET, Embrace the Deciding Mindset

Being in the Dwelling Mindset is like treading water: all motion, no movement. You dwell when you obsess about the outcome of a decision without working to influence it. After the obsession, the decision still needs to be made and you are no closer to making it. Obsession feeds the size and scale of the decision. Soon, the decision becomes too frightening to manage creating a fertile environment for hopelessness. Eventually, other decisions can become just as frightening. The Deciding Mindset sees reality for what it is and uses curiosity to discover the reality behind them.

Don't dwell.

PRINCIPLE 2: Method
MAKING DECISIONS IS A PROCESS, NOT AN EVENT

Too often decisions are viewed as an event, or a moment in time. The Deciding Mindset appreciates that making a decision is a multi-step process and the decision event is one step in that process. Learning about the crucial steps leading up to the decision event gives you comfort that you have taken reasonable efforts to execute a decision event with confidence. With Decide Don’t Dwell you will learn the method to make well informed decisions and how to use the Deciding Mindset to sustain progress throughout the process.

Decide.

PRINCIPLE 3: Follow-Through
OUTCOMES MUST BE, NOT CAN BE, MANAGED

Making the decision is far from the final step of the process. After a decision event there are many possible actions you can take based on the outcome of the decision. You can build on new opportunities, influence the current outcome, or even reverse the outcome of a decision. Outcome management is an extension of the Deciding Mindset and can help ensure that when you make the wrong decision, which you will (like the rest of us), then you can still influence the outcome to fit your needs and objectives.

Manage outcomes.
